Man is said to have occupied this area of Ireland for over 9,000 years and the tomb monuments of this era still puzzle and intrigue archaeologists.

There are in excess of 5,000 registered monuments in County Sligo. The Glencolmcille area has 130 monuments. Both areas boasts an incredible concentration of megalithic and neolithic monuments. Mid Ulster also has Stone Age monuments, and like Sligo all later periods are well represented with interesting sites.

The remains of Cathedrals, Friaries, Monasteries and churches some dating back to the birth of Christianity in Ireland abound in these locations.
