Sligo - Leitrim Tour

Grave of WB Yeats at Drumcliffe, Sligo
Maeve's Tomb at Knocknarea, Sligo
Franciscan Friary, Rossnowlagh.

The tour will begin in Donegal Town where the Franciscan Order arrived in 1447 and go south through the picturesque Rossnowlagh where the Franciscan's can be found today. Then through the historic town of Ballyshannon to hear about who lived and made their mark there since Neolithic times between 3-4 thousand years B.C. We travel the banks of the river Erne to the seaside resort of Bundoran, one of the major surfing destinations on the Atlantic's western seaboard.

Crossing the Drowes river brings us to Co. Leitrim and Connaught. Shortly we are in Sligo 'the Land of Hearts Desire' according to W.B. Yeats. See a Disney type castle called Classiebawn and hear of the three Lords connected with the Castle. We hear of the Spanish Armada under majestic Benbulben and of the rebel Countess M.P. who came from this area. Queen Maebh, from the mists of Mythology still keeps a watchful eye for the Ulstermen from her perch on top of Knocknarea. Sligo city is delightful with lots of places of interest, galleries, museums, libraries, wonderful architecture, nice streetscapes and interesting walks.

Leaving Sligo we return to Leitrim again to see the Glencarr Waterfall and the rebuilt Parkes Castle. Manorhamilton is the plantation town built by the Hamilton Family as part of their commitment for being granted the lands in this area. Then it is through the glorious glens of Leitrim hoping to avoid the dreaded Darracou at Glenade before returning to our Donegal Hotel in time for dinner.
